The Ashes Fifth Test Betting Tips and Odds

  • England v Australia
  • LV= Insurance Men’s Ashes, Fifth Test (of five)
  • Thursday, July 27 - Monday, July 31, 2023 (11am)
  • The Kia Oval

Is there any way we could extend this series by another five Tests because it’s been sensational viewing. It has lived up to expectations and more. For me, it very much rivals 2005.

It has almost been a series played out between two flawed geniuses. Australia, a rugged, hard-nosed side who play it tough, against England’s swashbucklers.

I can see the view - and wouldn’t completely dismiss it - that Australia got out of jail with the rain at Emirates Old Trafford, and England, for want of a better word, were robbed. But it’s a theory which doesn’t hold a great deal of weight with me.

My view is that England deserved to be 2-0 down. They have been excellent since. But if you play poorly enough to go two down in a five-match series, you leave yourselves open to things such as the Manchester weather.

Anyway, I think Australia are the better side. They were awful at Old Trafford, but they will have been jolted into action by their near miss. And I think they’ll win at the Oval. Bet365 have them at a best price of 15/8 to do so.

If that happens, it will bring home my pre-series tip on a 3-1 correct score (albeit I did have a mid-series change of heart and suggest 5-0 at one stage).

The Ashes

Australia’s batting will be just too strong on Oval featherbed

It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see Australia bat England out of this game in the first innings. And there are a number of price boosts and combination bets which reflect that and have caught my eye.

But before I get onto that, I will suggest continued success for Stuart Broad, the leading wicket-taker in this series with 18, and runs for Joe Root - or boundaries, to be precise.

This will be the last opportunity Broad has to terrorise David Warner, who is retiring from Test Cricket at the end of the forthcoming Australian home summer.

Bet365 have him at 5/6 to take over 4.5 wickets in the match. I would be taking that.

They’re also offering 1/1 on Root to hit over 8.5 boundaries in the match. I expect him to have a good match, so he should be able to cover that.

PaddyPower, via their #WhatOddsPaddy section, are offering 6/5 on Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Usman Khawaja and Travis Head, all to score 10 plus runs in the first innings. That looks appealing to me.

Labuschagne found form at Emirates Old Trafford with a fifty and a century in the match, and Smith scored a century at the Oval at the beginning of this tour in the World Test Championship final win over India.

PaddyPower are offering 9/2 on Smith and Labuschagne to both score first-inning fifties.

And, finally, I really like the look of William Hill’s juicy 9/1 on Australia to win and Smith scoring a first-innings century.

The Ashes Series Betting Tips and Odds

If you’re hoping for an all singing and dancing patriotic Ashes preview, I’m sorry - you’ve come to the wrong place. This, for me, is a series which is going Australia’s way.

I love the way England are playing and am all for it.

And I wouldn’t want it to change even with a tough period. Unfortunately, that’s what I expect this to be.

Australia, the newly crowned World Test champions, just look too strong in all departments, and I would be taking what I think is a fantastic price at 10/11 Bet365 on them to win the series.

England are 13/8 for the confident amongst you.

Don’t be Green with envy, get on these Ladbrokes series bets

First of all, I’m going to take the 7/4 Ladbrokes are offering on Pat Cummins to be Australia’s leading wicket-taker, someone who has taken 33 wickets in six Tests in England, including four against India in last week’s World Test Championship final at the Oval.

As captain, surely the aim will be for him to play all five Tests and for Australia’s management to rotate their seamers around him.

Ashes Series

A key to Cummins’ playing five Tests will actually be the next man I’m going to advise backing, Cameron Green.

He is the Aussie Ben Stokes if you will, but a younger and probably fitter model. If he can bowl a good number of overs, that will help Cummins stay fresh.

I really like the look of the 5/1 Ladbrokes are offering on Green to score 250 runs plus in the series, to take 10 wickets plus and for Australia to win. I think that’s a great bet.

Ollie Pope is my man to be England’s leading series run-scorer, and he is the subject of a price boost at 4/1 with bet365. He is fresh off some good early season county form and 205 in the Test against Ireland at Lord’s at the start of the month.

Pope is starting to turn potential into performance, and this could be a breakthrough series.

The Ashes 2023 Series Preview

Freddie Flintoff, Steve Smith, Ben Stokes and the late, great Shane Warne have all left an indelible mark on a rivalry which remains as strong as ever even with the influx of short-form league after short-form league.

Let’s hope there are many more magic moments to follow over the next couple of months, and hopefully a bit of cash made for us along the way.

The series begins at Edgbaston on Friday June 16, with matches to follow at Lord’s, Headingley, Emirates Old Trafford and the Kia Oval through to July 31.

England are the marginal favourites, though Australia could rock up at Lord’s as the new world Test champions.

England, led by captain Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, have caught the eye of the world with their new exhilarating style of play, brushing aside New Zealand, South Africa and Pakistan at home and abroad over the last 12 months.

Despite a 2–1 defeat in India earlier this year, Australia’s recent form has also been good. But they have done it in a more understated manner.

The likes of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne have ground it out and set things up for their daunting battery of pace bowlers, led by captain Pat Cummins.

England have not won an Ashes series since 2015 when they won 3-2 at home. And since then, they have lost two away and drawn one at home.

The last series, Down Under in the winter of 2021/2022, went to the Aussies 4-0, while the 2019 series in England was drawn 2–2.

Nobody will ever forget the innings played by Stokes - 135 not out - in the third Test at Headingley to secure a one-wicket win and level the series at 1–1.

Runs, wickets, winning bets – bring it on!
