America’s Cup Final Betting Guide

Oracle Team USA and Great Britain’s Sir Ben Ainslie are one win away from one of the great sporting comebacks as the America’s Cup goes into a winner-takes-all final showdown tonight.

Having been docked two points before the regatta began, Oracle were 8-1 down to Emirates Team New Zealand but yesterday the momentum had well and truly shifted after the Americans claimed their sixth and seventh straight wins to level at 8-8. The event goes to a decider for only the third time in its 162-year history.

This is reflected in the betting as well, with the bookmakers making Oracle Team USA the favourites to seal a remarkable fightback. They are now either 4/11 or 1/3 in the market, with William Hill and betVictor offering the best price.

Despite the Kiwis clearly having the class to take that whopping 8-1 lead, you can now bet on them at 9/4 with Ladbrokes to claim the crown.

“You have to approach it like every other race,” said a calm Ainslie on the BBC website.

The four-time Olympic champion, 36, took over the important tactician role from veteran John Kostecki with the score 4-1, but Team USA has since won nine times in 13 races, which are being held against the stunning backdrop of San Francisco.

Oracle have been on the precipice for the last few days, and again they entered Race 17 in the knowledge that one slip would cost them the Americas Cup, but it was New Zealand who started nervously at the start.

As the two boats came together, Emirates Team New Zealand were given two penalties, enabling Team USA to get a clean start and from there they rarely looked back.

“New Zealand was supposed to do everything it could to stay clear and it didn’t,” the Cup’s chief umpire explained to the media. “Two penalties were assessed.”

Team USA went on to win by 27 seconds and make it a record sixth straight win in the Americas Cup, and bring it back to 8-7 to increase the drama ahead of yesterday’s showdown.

It wasn’t totally straightforward though, with New Zealand managing to squeeze ahead in Race 18 though, as they looked to finally see-off the determined challenge from the hosts, but, with all the momentum against them, again they could not hold on, setting up the grand finale tonight.

Oracle stormed ahead and opened up a gap of as much as 1000m as the defending champions won a 10th race overall of the event and level it all up at 8-8. They now stand on the verge of the biggest comeback in the 172-year history of the Americas Cup. It promises to be some event but despite the momentum with Oracle Team USA, I think the Kiwis are a great bet at 9/4 with Ladbrokes to finally claim the Americas Cup.
