We’re all aware of what the NBA is and the popular American Sport of Basketball is, but ever since the introduction of the Euro League, it’s been a popular viewing choice in Europe and a lot of the UK. Now the NBA is trying to boost the stock of the NBA with a yearly game.
This year’s game will take place at the London O2 Arena, when the Atlanta Hawks play a home game against the Brooklyn Nets. A sell-out crowd is expected as well as a respectable travelling amount from the stats, as well as thousands of European based fans.
Everyone in attendance – myself included – I’m sure will be disappointed not to see Al Horford, Deron Williams or Brook Lopez in action, but we will all get to witness a couple of NBA pro’s in action in the form of Nets duo Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce.
The Hawks will still boost one of the smoothest three point shooters the NBA has seen – and one of the most consistent too – in Kyle Korver. Jeff Teague will be the main attraction if you’re a Hawks fan, though.
Normally this would have taken place in Atlanta, but having sacrificed their home game to make the trip to London, it no longer is. It’ll still be billed as a Hawks home game and there will be home treatment in place I’m sure, but it’s well known the fan base for the Brooklyn Nets is large enough and still growing in the UK.
The Atlanta Hawks are far from top of the list when it comes to fan favourite teams in the UK, so the spread will be skewed and this one will purely be down to who reacts to the occasion better, so where does that leave our betting options?
The Nets have been made a -2 favourite by the bookies, and that’s based largely on recent form and current player availability. The Hawks would no doubt be a -5 favourite if this was a home game for them.
I’d love to think one day it’ll be logistically possible that every team plays one game in the UK during an NBA season, because a neutral venue really should make for the best possible Basketball from both teams.
Both sides have had three full days to prepare and arrived in the UK on Monday. They’ll be well rested and both wanting to put on a show come Thursday evening, but it’s important to remember there’s still an NBA regular season win at stake.
I think Piece and Garnett are going to take over this game. They’re experienced. They won’t let the occasion get to them in the wrong way, and they’ll keep their teams feet on the floor with their experience.
Take Brooklyn Nets -2 at a nice price of 1.95 with bookmakers Pinnacle as your NBA bet for this evening.
