The Australian Open is the first Grand Slam of the season and it’s the most important for a number of male players.
Novak Djokovic is the current favourite to defend his title at 13/10 with Sportingbet. The Serbian won three out of the four majors last season and remains the man to beat at this moment in time. Djokovic has shown that he can win in a variety of conditions and against different types of opponent. However, he has to cope with the extra pressure now that the top players will be trying overly hard to beat him.
Roger Federer looks as though he is playing some of the best tennis of his career and he is a 4/1 shot to win this title in most places on the market. Federer breezed through his opening match and played some shots which prove he is in the best shape and some of the best form of his life. Federer will want to add further Grand Slam titles to his collection to seal his place as the best player in history.
Andy Murray has played very well in this tournament over the last few seasons and he continues his search for a first major title. This is the surface which suits Murray’s game and he looks hungrier than he has ever been. Murray has to keep believing that he is good enough to win a Grand Slam tournament and if he keeps getting into finals then sooner or later he is going to win one. He is 11/2 with a few bookies.
Rafael Nadal looked very determined during his opening round match in Australia. He seems to have picked up the pace and has worked a little bit on his strength which should make him much harder for the top seeds to beat. Nadal is the sort of individual who can beat anyone if he plays to his best and his extra strength also means he’ll be able to maintain his performance levels late into matches. He is 13/2 with a couple of bookies.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is rated as the best of the outsiders at 22/1 with Sportingbet. The Frenchman has previously reached the final of this event and played some of his best ever tennis last season. Tsonga is a power house and has the ability to bully any other player on the circuit all over the court. He’ll be looking to try and do this against the top seeds and he stands a great chance of doing well if he’s in form.
Juan Martin Del Potro is rated at the same price as Tsonga with the same bookie. The advantage Del Potro has an outsider is that he has already won a major in the US Open. This was on a similar sort of surface to the Australian Open. The Argentine looks fitter and stronger than he has been in previous seasons which gives him a good chance of causing an upset.
