Chelsea v Roma Betting Tips – 18th October 2017
Antonio Conte was the manager on everybody’s lips last season as he won the Premier League title with Chelsea in his first season in English football.
Conte famously took just a couple of days off after Italy’s Euro 2016 campaign before starting work at Chelsea and he was back at work nice and early this summer as he made plans for the new season.
Unfortunately, the summer was far from an unqualified success for the Italian. A supposed lack of support from the board and the falling out with Diego Costa gave rise to feelings that all was not well behind the scenes at Chelsea.
Now, that ill feeling has spread to the pitch as Chelsea are nine points off the top of Premier League after just eight games. Some believe that means Conte should make the bold call to prioritise the Champions League over Chelsea’s domestic campaign.
The Blues have won both their games in Group C (including a hugely impressive win against Atletico Madrid away from home) and are the favourites to make it three from three when Roma visit Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
Morata’s Return to Make the Difference for Chelsea
Chelsea fans know that being the bookie’s favourites is far from a guarantee of winning. The Blues were the clear favourites against Crystal Palace on the weekend but ended up on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline.
Speaking after that match, Gary Cahill was very frank in his assessment of his team’s performance, saying they fell disappointingly short of the levels they’re capable of.
Cahill and his teammates must now raise their levels against Roma or else their Champions League campaign will suffer just like their Premier League campaign has.
The main problem for Chelsea is that they will still be without key players through injury. N’Golo Kate and Victor Moses were both huge parts of the title-winning team while Danny Drinkwater has not yet been able to play for his new club.
The one good bit of news for Conte is that Alvaro Morata is expected to be fit. The Spaniard has been at the heart of most of what Chelsea have done well this season and his return could make the difference.
This has become a very important game in Chelsea’s season and we think they’ll pass the test by winning at 4/6 with Coral.
Roma Capable of Scoring on the Big Stage
Juventus’ dominance of Serie A has made the competition less of a spectacle in recent years. Thankfully for Italian football fans, the new season looks set to be much more entertaining and Roma are one of the clubs in with a shot of the title.
The giallorossi have already lost twice in the league but they’ve also picked up wins against Udinese and Milan. This is a team capable of playing well on the big stage and they’ll be smelling blood against a weakened Chelsea team.
We think that the home side will grab the win but not without Roma making a game of it. So, make sure to back both teams to score at 17/20 with Sportingbet.
We also fancy Roma to try and take an early lead like they did against Qarabag so a bet on over 1.5 first-half goals could well pay dividends at 9/5 with BetVictor.
Nainggolan to Show Conte What He’s Missing
In terms of Roma’s potential to score, they’ve got plenty of options to worry Chelsea. Edin Dzeko knows all about English football from his time at Man City and Stephan El Shaarawy is a top quality forward but the man we think is the best value to score for the away side is Radja Nainggolan.
Chelsea’s inability to sign the Belgian midfielder was one of the key causes for Conte’s frustration in the summer and Nainggolan can make life even tougher for the Blues’ manager by scoring at 21/4 with 888Sport.
