England will be looking to keep their strangle hold on India tight following the thumping win in the one-off Twenty20 international.
England are not traditionally strong in the 50 over format of the game but they have the edge over India who have brought in a new generation of younger players for ODI cricket. England will make a few changes to the side that beat India in the T20 match which could see more experience brought into the middle order. England have odds of 4/6 to win this match with various bookmakers including Stan James and Victor Chandler.
India will just be desperate for any sort of win because they have been battered all over the country since they arrived in England. India are of course the World Champions in 50 over cricket which means the youngsters in the side will be under immediate pressure to start scoring big runs and taking important wickets. India are 6/5 with the bookies on the market at present including Boylesports and Coral.
Alastair Cook is one name that India are going to have to work hard on to remove. Cook has taken to the ODI captaincy like a duck to water and he has a bright future ahead of him. England have not played as well as they can in recent times but cook already has an ODI century to his name when many doubted if he could play this version of the game. Cook is 7/2 with Stan James to score the most runs.
MS Dhoni is the captain of India and a key player in the Indian middle order. He is one of the few players in the Indian team who can come in and take a match away from England with some explosive hitting. England have had the edge over him through India’s tour but he should be very determined to go out with a bang in the ODI series. Dhoni is a tempting bet to top score for India at 8/1.
James Anderson will be a key player for England if he does play in this version of the game. Anderson can get the ball to swing around corners which will be very difficult to play against, especially if India are made to bat second as the game wears on. Anderson also has some subtle variations which are going to be vital going into the last few overs of the Indian innings. Graeme Swann will also be an important bowler and he should be more in the match as he’ll have time to settle down and work away at key batsmen.
Munaf Patel bowled very well in the T20 international and should have done enough to ensure that he starts in the 50 over games. He never tries to do anything special and just bowls a solid line and length at decent pace which is hard to bat against. If there is any assistance in the pitch for the seamers then Patel will find it because he has a classic action which leads to him always hitting the seam.
