England got their ODI campaign under the permanent captaincy of Alastair Cook off to a brilliant start at a drenched Oval in London.
England war far better than their opponents across all areas and this will create a confidence which the side can take forward into the next game. England are 4/11 to win the second ODI match which may seem a bit short but they seem to have the edge over their opponents in this series.
Sri Lanka are going to be looking for a reaction and this is the bear minimum that their coach will accept. Their bowling and fielding was generally very good but they let themselves down on the batting side with some poor shot selections. Sri Lanka look a good bet in the betting market at odds of 33/10 to win. The lengthy odds are simply because of England’s emphatic victory.
Craig Kieswetter had a very good game behind the stumps and with the bat during the first game. The South African born Englishman will be looking to get his team off to another good start in the second game and he’s a good bet to be top English batsman. The best price for Kieswetter to shine is double money at 2/1.
Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene are both 6/4 in places on the market to be the main man in the nest game for the tourists. Both players let themselves down during the first game and they are bound to get a big score in ODI cricket at some point in this series. Sangakkara in particular seems to be full of confidence despite his failure with the bat at the Oval.
James Anderson seemed to be in fine form with the ball for England as he got to swing round corners during the first game. Anderson seemed pumped up and determined to show one and all why he is the main man in England’s attack across all forms of the game. Betfair offers 19/20 that Anderson will be England’s top bowler.
Lasith Malinga caused all sorts of problems for the England batsmen during the first game despite the fact he could only bowl a reduced number of overs and England made a good target. His sling-like action seems difficult to pick up and he has the best slower ball in cricket which quite often makes a batsman look like an idiot. Malinga is 7/10 to be top bowler for Sri Lanka, also with Betfair.
England seem to have the bit between their teeth but it will be interesting to see how they play under the captaincy of Cook who is yet to be put under real pressure. Cook is a very calm and measured person who puts his defence up every time he talks to the media. He seems to have the respect of the players, some younger and older than himself.
England are in a good place right now and a 4-1 series win wouldn’t be out of the question at 9/4 with Skybet.
