Fulham fans were more than a little apprehensive going into the first leg of their playoff semi-final against Derby. The Cottagers would have finished second and thus won promotion to the Premier League automatically had they beaten Birmingham on the final day of the season but defeat left them facing the playoffs.

Slavisa Jokanović used every man management technique in his arsenal ahead of Fulham’s trip to Pride Park but couldn’t coax the best out of his players. The Fulham manager will at least be happy that his players managed to keep the scoring down to 1-0.

That home win makes Derby the narrow favourites to qualify for the final at Wembley with the bookies but Fulham are the favourites to win the return leg at Craven Cottage so expect fireworks in the desperate fight to win promotion.

Fulham to Keep the Dream Alive

Fulham and Derby were among the top scorers in the regular Championship season with 149 goals between them. The low scoring nature of the first leg was, therefore, pretty surprising. That said, the pressure of the occasion was always going to be a factor and it’s understandable that many players looked a little overawed by it all.

In that respect, Jokanović can actually use the failure of his players as motivation. Fulham know what happens when they don‘t bring their stuff and the players should be desperate to ensure they don’t suffer more disappointment on Monday night.

Derby have a good deal of experience in the top two divisions of English football and will certainly have their moments at Craven Cottage. However, Fulham are the favourites to win the match for a reason and we think it could be worth backing the Cottagers to book their place in the playoff final at evens with Unibet.

Expect Much More Action in the Return Leg

The playoffs do have their critics. Some claim that it is unfair that the team who finishes third don’t automatically go up into the Premier League but there is no argument about the level of drama they produce year in, year out.

Everybody at Derby and Fulham has put in an extraordinary amount of work to achieve their aim of promotion to the Premier League. There is no chance that either set of players will give up on their dream during Monday night’s match which raises the prospect of a frantic finish to the match.

You can profit from yet more playoff drama in a number of ways.

The first betting avenue to turn down is backing over 2.5 goals which is available at 10/11 with Ladbrokes. Both teams easily have the quality to score two goals and you can be sure there will be chances at either end.

We think that Fulham’s combination of quality and determination will see them through to the final in a close match so back the home team to win and both teams to score which is available at 11/4 with Betfred.

Sessegnon to Rise to the Occasion

The Den can be a very difficult place for away players to perform. The Millwall fans don’t hide away from trying to put opposition fans off their game and the buzz around Ryan Sessegnon made it inevitable that he would come in for some special treatment when Fulham visited the Den in April.

The Millwall fans had the desired impact during the first half but Fulham turned it on in the second and it was Sessegnon who broke the deadlock. Sessegnon won even more fans for the way he silenced the home crowd that day but he can have the opposite impact at Craven Cottage, sending the home fans wild by scoring the game’s first goal at 24/5 with 888Sport
