Huddersfield v Reading Betting Predictions

Publish: 18.10.2018

There is nothing fair about the playoffs. After 46 games of a gruelling season in the Championship season you’d think that the top three teams deserve to go up but where would we be without the drama of the playoffs?

Huddersfield FC

This season we’ve already seen late drama and a penalty shootout as Sheffield Wednesday and Fulham lost in their playoff semi-finals and all that’s left is the massive showpiece event between Huddersfield and Reading at Wembley Stadium.

For Reading, victory in the playoff final would see them return to the top flight for the first time since being relegated in 2013. For Huddersfield, the win would take them into the Premier League for the first time which would be a huge achievement for a club with one of the smallest budgets in the Championship.

Match Stats and Form

  • Reading ended the regular season with the second-best home record in the Championship but lost 11 times away from the Madejski Stadium
  • Huddersfield survived six defeats from their last 10 games to book their place in the playoffs
  • Both sides won their home fixture against the other by one goal to nil
  • The last eight meetings between these two produced three wins for each and two draws
  • Combined, Reading and Huddersfield conceded 122 league goals in the regular season

Predicted Line-Ups

Huddersfield – Ward; Smith, Hefele, Schindler, Pudil; Hoog, Mooy; Payne, Holmes-Dennis, Quaner; Fletcher

Reading – Al Habsi; Blackett, Moore, van den Berg; Gunter, Williams, Evans, Obita; Mendes, Grabban, Kermogrant

Key Battles

Neither Huddersfield nor Reading ended the season with particularly impressive defensive records but it was Reading who were the significantly higher scores. Yann Kermorgant made an especially important contribution to 19 league goals but the four-man Huddersfield defence cannot simply concern themselves with him.

Reading utilise their 3-4-3 formation to get men into the box to finish off chances so Huddersfield boss, David Wagner, must come up with another well-crafted plan to stop Jaap Stam’s men from dominating the game.

Betting Analysis

Despite the extra money that Reading have to spend on their squad and the fact that they finished the season above Huddersfield, it’s the Terriers who go into Monday’s game as the favourites with the bookies.

The best price that you’ll find on Wagner’s men is the 11/8 that Boylesports are quoting which looks like good value to us.

Few people thought that Huddersfield would have any chance of mixing it with the best sides in the Championship when the season began but they’ve defied the odds all season long and in Wagner, they have a man who knows exactly how to motivate his team for a big performance.

The 45-year-old German is great friends with Jurgen Klopp and worked with the Liverpool manager at Borussia Dortmund. They share a footballing philosophy and we could well see another team playing ‘rock and roll football’ in the Premier League next season.

While Reading may well end up disappointed to have to go through another season in the playoffs there is no chance of them failing to put up a fight at Wembley. Stam has imposed an attractive style of football on the Royals since taking over at the club and Huddersfield will find it very difficult to keep a clean sheet.

That makes a bet on both teams to score look tempting at 42/41 with 888Sport while it could also be worth backing Huddersfield to score in both halves at 29/10 with Betfair.
