It’s pretty hard to expect much of the visitors when Oldham visit Anfield to take on Liverpool this afternoon, but the whole point of a shock is that it’s just that – a shock. That said, this would be a monumental shock.
Oldham performed heroics to knock Liverpool out of the FA Cup when these two met last season, and a 3-2 win at Boundary Park was just revenge for a 5-1 thrashing at Anfield the previous season.
It gives us a decent sample to work with between two teams that don’t meet in league play. But of course, anyone could tell you Liverpool are capable of destroying a League One side at home, whilst a shock would be more likely in a reverse of this fixture.
The positives for the visitors are that Sakho and Sturridge will be forced to miss out, whilst Gerrard and Allen are also absent in midfield. As long as Suarez is ready to go, I doubt any of that matters much, but I’m sure Oldham will be hoping Liverpool play in a way that conserves a bit of energy with fewer rotational options than usual.
Rotation is definitely still going to happen though and you can probably expect to see some extended playing time for the likes of Sterling and Ibe perhaps. Oldham don’t have that luxury and will go with their regular XI, but it’s going to take a hell of a lot of grit and determination on the day.
The home side have netted 22 goals in their previous 7 games, and a certain Luis Suarez has been responsible for a hefty 15 of those. You’ll do well to find a reason why he won’t net at least once again tomorrow, and Suarez to score 2+ goals is 11/8 (2.38) with Sky Bet.
It’s not the easiest game to find value amongst unless you are willing to take a pop at a Liverpool handicap between -2.00 and -3.5. Bookies have most bases covered, but if you do think the magic of the FA Cup will help Oldham find the back of the net then you can get a juicy 15/8 (2.88) on Liverpool winning and both teams scoring.
Plenty of food for thought, but my personal bet on this game will be Liverpool -3 at 27/20 (2.35) with bookmaker Bet365!
