Man City v Newcastle Betting Tips – 20th January 2018
It finally happened. After well over half of the Premier League season, Man City finally lost their first league game against Liverpool on Sunday.
Pep Guardiola has always said that he he learns much more from his team in the tough spells and he was surprisingly upbeat after the 4-3 reversal at Anfield.
If anything, the defeat will only stoke the fire inside Guardiola and he’ll be doing everything possible to ensure that Man City bounce back with a win against Newcastle on Saturday at the Etihad.
Newcastle to Feel Man City’s Wrath
There’s never a good time to play this Man City side but it feels very much as though this could be the worst time for Newcastle to be playing Guardiola’s men.
It wasn’t just that the Citizens lost against Liverpool, it was the nature of the defeat. Man City conceded three quick fire goals just when they were getting a foothold in the match and they still managed to make the game entertaining by coming scoring two late goals.
Liverpool forced mistakes from Man City by pressing aggressively up the pitch and were lethal when presented with chances. It was the sort of football that you’d expect from City themselves and the worry for their fans is that other teams can effectively use Liverpool’s game plan as a template.
Fortunately for Man City, there is no chance of Newcastle pressing anywhere near as high up the pitch or being anything like as brave in an attacking sense.
Rafa Benitez is much more comfortable employing a low block to limit space to his opponents. While that’s a tactic that kept Man City at bay for long spells of their encounter at St James’ Park, we foresee no such problems in Manchester.
The Magpies have improved a little of late but they’ve secured just a single point against the Premier League’s top 10. Furthermore, Newcastle have scored just five goals against the top half so a bet on Man City winning to nil should pay out nicely at 37/40 with BetVictor.
Newcastle to Face Another Chastening Day
Rafa Benitez may be revered by the Toon Army but they know their football in Newcastle and they’re therefore in no doubt about how much trouble the team are in.
While talk of a takeover has quietened down in recent days, Benitez has claimed he has no idea how much money, if any, there is for him to strengthen the team in the transfer window.
At this point, it should hardly surprise us that Mike Ashley could have such flagrant disregard for the future of our club. But unfulfilled promises over transfer business this January could be devastating for #nufc. https://t.co/nTL2cCLXCf— The Spectator's View (@thespectoview) January 10, 2018
That leaves the former Liverpool and Real Madrid manager with a squad that is lacking talent by Premier League standards. Benitez is doing what he can with the players at his disposal but it’s becoming increasingly clear that Newcastle will do very well to avoid the drop.
The Magpies are just three points clear of the relegation zone. Their morale is already low and it’s not going to improve at the Etihad with Man City ready to send out a message that they’re not about to falter in their quest for the title.
We’re expecting a big Man City win so make sure to bet on over 3.5 goals at 9/10 with Betfair. It may also be worth betting on Man City to win both halves which is 10/11 with Betway.
Sané to Cause Big Problems Down the Newcastle Right
There are several areas where Benitez would love to strengthen his team. Towards the top of the list is at right-back where DeAndre Yedlin has been caught out numerous times since Newcastle won promotion back to the top flight.
Yedlin will likely come up against the excellent Leroy Sané on Saturday and there’s only going to be one winner there.
Sané’s pace, trickery and finishing ability make him a huge threat from the left-hand flank and he could end up terrorising Yedlin. So, have a bet on Sané scoring two or more goals at 8/1 with Paddy Power.
