Football fans have a real treat in store this weekend. ‘Rivalry Weekend’, as Sky Sports have termed it, sees some of the biggest derbies in British football take place with the first Premier League action provided by Manchester United versus Liverpool.

The rivalry between these two North West giants is every bit as fierce as that between Rangers and Celtic or Hibernian and Hearts. It should also be a cracking match with Liverpool’s current run of excellent form making them hopeful of their first win at Old Trafford since March 2014.

Is Another Stalemate On the Cards?

Each of the last four matches between Man Utd and Liverpool have ended in a draw. While both sets of fans are desperate to get one over on their rivals, we could be in line for yet another draw.

Jose Mourinho was absolutely fuming when his team conceded a sloppy goal to go 2-0 down shortly after half-time against Crystal Palace on Monday.

It looked for all the world as though Man Utd were going to suffer another damaging defeat in their quest for a top four finish at that point. Thankfully for everyone connected with the club, the Red Devils managed to turn it round and won courtesy of a wonderful Nemanja Matic strike.

While United left it late, Liverpool had no such problems on Saturday. Two goals either side of half-time saw off the challenge of Newcastle at Anfield to make it three straight wins for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

When they get into their stride Liverpool are capable of some of the best attacking football in Europe. The problem they may have at Old Trafford is getting up to full speed.

Mourinho’s men haven’t always triumphed when attempting to play a spoiling role this season but they have limited Liverpool to just one goal in their three meetings since the Portuguese took over at the club.

We don’t think that Man Utd will be able to stop Liverpool from scoring on Saturday afternoon but we do think they’ll stop them from winning. Equally, Liverpool’s strength going forward will make it very tough for United to pick up all three points so we recommend backing the draw at 5/2 with Marathonbet.

Both Teams to Score Looks a No Brainer

Such has been the quality of Liverpool’s play at times this season that some pundits have suggested they could spring a surprise and win the Champions League.

Farfetched as that may seem to some, there is no doubt that Klopp’s men are capable of scoring goals against any team in Europe. They certainly have enough to score against a Man Utd team with only one clean sheet in their last four Premier League matches.

United showed their own attacking quality against Crystal Palace making both teams to score look like a pretty safe bet at 3/4 with Betfair.

Those who are looking for a bigger payout from their betting may wish to head to the correct score market and take the 6/1 that BetVictor are quoting on the 1-1 score line.

Expect Tempers to Flare in This Heated Derby

The Merseyside derby has seen more red cards than any other Premier League fixture but Liverpool’s games against Man Utd can be just as tasty.

This is not a match for shrinking violets and you can be sure of more than a few big tackles on Saturday.

To capitalise on this, have a bet on Liverpool to be shown over three cards at 13/5 with William Hill.

It may also be worth having a punt on Scott McTominay being sent off at 25/1 with Unibet. He’s been starting recently and there’s a real chance the youngster could be a little over exuberant in his attempts to show he can handle the atmosphere.
