The Europa League is very much Europe’s secondary club cup competition, playing second fiddle to the Champions League. However, there is a great deal of European pedigree shared between the 2018 finalists, Marseille and Atletico Madrid.

Marseille were the first team to win the newly-branded Champions League back in 1993. They’ve also twice reached the final of the UEFA Cup/Europa League, falling at the final hurdle on both occasions.

Atletico Madrid know all about European heartbreak having lost in the final of the Champions League against city rivals, Real Madrid, in 2014. They have, however, won the Europa League twice including once under popular current manager, Diego Simeone.

Clash of Styles Should Produce an Engrossing Cup Final

Under Simeone, Atletico Madrid have become one of the toughest teams to beat in all of Europe. They’ve utilised their incredible organisation, resilience and fighting spirit to come on top in big matches all over the continent but didn’t quite have enough to qualify from their Champions League group.

Finishing third behind Roma and Chelsea meant that Atletico dropped into the Europa League. That was not the plan at the start of the campaign but Simeone deserves credit for the professional approach that he and his players have taken to the competition.

By contrast, Marseille’s Europa League campaign began in the third round of qualifying. They’ve had a few missteps along the way to the final in Lyon but Marseille’s brand of attacking football has seen them through in some style.

It’s not quite a case of the immovable object meeting the irresistible force but Atletico and Marseille definitely go about their business in different styles. That should ensure Wednesday’s final is a game you can’t take your eyes off.

Atletico’s European pedigree and the strength of their squad makes them the odds-on favourites with the bookies but it could be worth taking them on. Marseille’s key attacking players have hit form at just the right time and could prove to be too good even for this excellent Atletico side.

Providing Rudi García’s men maintain their defensive discipline, they might just spring a surprise by winning the Europa League at 11/5 with 888Sport.

Marseille to Take Atletico Out of Their Comfort Zone

Atletico Madrid will be very well aware of Marseille’s biggest threats. Dimitri Payet and Florian Thauvin each have the individual quality to decide games even of this magnitude and Atletico will have their hands full trying to stop the influential pair.

Lucas Ocampos and Valère Germain are likely to start alongside Payet and Thauvin in a Marseille attack that has really hit form recently.

It’s never easy to score against Atletico Madrid and their potent threat on the counter is something Marseille must be prepared for but we think they’ll have enough going forwards to swing this match.

It may take a little while for this game to catch fire but once it does it should be an excellent spectacle. To profit from a slow burner that bursts into life, have a bet on both teams to score in the second half at 31/10 with Unibet.

It may also pay to back Marseille to win the trophy in extra time, an outcome you can back at 20/1 with Coral.

Payet Ready to Shine on the Big Stage

Despite having all the talent in the world, Dimitri Payet has only ever really shone for short spells during his career. That lack of consistency can be frustrating but when Payet hits form he is up there with the best in the world.

That Payet has found his best stuff recently is great news for Marseille and France and you should capitalise on his abilities by backing Payet to score anytime at 6/1 with Betfred.
