The 400 metres is considered by some athletes as the most difficult event in athletics to do because of the speed that is required and the pain which has to be endured.
It’s no surprise to see the Americans as the odds on favourites to win this event at 8/13 in a couple of places. The USA have a well balanced team and they have good history in this event. They are in good form in 2012 and will be looking to add another gold to their tally as they chase down China in the medal table. If they get a good start then there will be no stopping them.
The Bahamas are second favourites at a best price of 5s with Boylesports. The Bahamas don’t have a massive field of athletes to choose from but they have a select few who are very good in short distance running events like this. They will be looking to get off to a good start and place pressure on the Americans quickly who will be wary of any early pressure in the first one or two laps.
Jamaica are famous in sprint racing but for the much shorter version of 100 metres. They have some solid athletes performing in this race but they have not been consistent over 400 metres. If they could get all of their 400 metres runners to race like Usain Bolt then they would win the gold by an absolute mile. The best price on Jamaica winning is 16s with a few bookies.
Belgium are one of the surprise outsiders at 20/1 with William Hill. The Belgians will like the fact that they are under pretty much no pressure at all so they can go out and give it there best shot in every race. They have some technically gifted athletes and have set some quick times this season which will ensure that they are not too far away from the top teams in this event.
Great Britain are 22s with Bet365 to win this title. They don’t stand as good a chance as they would have done in the last couple of Olympics but if they can qualify well and start well then they are in with a shout. GB also have the advantage of the home support which has been having a tremendous effect across all events in the games so far. It would be a spectacular result if they managed to pull it off.
Russia will not like the fact they are sitting at 50s with Paddy Power. The Russians have always prided themselves on having elite athletes that can compete with the big guns in all of the short distance running events in athletics. The reason for this long price has been their inconsistency and they have not been able to improve on this in the months leading up to the Olympics.
