Newcastle may very deep in the mire of a relegation battle but there are reasons to be cheerful on Tyneside.

Rafa Benitez’s team have shown signs of real improvement lately and Man City are the only team to beat them in the Premier League since before Christmas.

They’ve been frustrated by draws against Swansea, Burnley and Crystal Palace in recent weeks but Toon Army would take a point when Man Utd visit St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.

Man Utd’s recent strong form was punctured by defeat against Tottenham last Wednesday night.

Jose Mourinho was happy enough that his team bounced back with a 2-0 win against Huddersfield but they must now maintain momentum to ensure they don’t slip up in their quest to book a place in next season’s Champions League.

Man Utd to Prove Too Strong for the Battling Magpies

Newcastle’s match against Crystal Palace last weekend was your typical game of two halves.

The Magpies came out of the traps flying and could have lead by more than the one goal advantage they held at the break.

It was very different in the second half though as Palace piled on the pressure and Jonjo Shelvey was incredibly fortunate not to give away a penalty for a blatant shirt pull.

If Newcastle drop their levels against Man Utd in the same way they did at Selhurst Park there’s little chance of them taking anything out of Sunday’s match.

Mourinho’s men showed their ruthless streak when coming back from a goal behind to beat Newcastle 4-1 at Old Trafford earlier in the season.

We think they’ll complete the league double over the Magpies so recommend backing them at 7/10 with Marathonbet.

Can Newcastle Continue Their Scoring Run?

Although Rafa Benitez has always been known as a defensive manager it was attacking reinforcements that he prioritised in the January transfer window.

The club’s financial situation made signings tough but Benitez did at least manage to convince Islam Slimani to join on loan.

Slimani will provide Newcastle with a much needed extra dimension going forwards. Although they’ve scored in their last five league matches, the Magpies have only scored more than one goal once in their last 10.

Whether or not Newcastle are capable of extending their scoring run against Man Utd, the attacking threat offered by the away side makes a bet on over 2.5 goals look good value at evens with Winner.

If you think that Newcastle will get on the scoresheet it may pay to look for ways of securing a bigger return from both teams scoring.

Given the way that Newcastle faded in the second half against Crystal Palace, Benitez may ask for a fast start from his players to give them something to defend. Mourinho will also be expecting his players to take an early lead so bet on both teams to score in the first half at 9/2 with Coral.

Shelvey to Put the Cat Among the Pigeons

Jonjo Shelvey has had his ups and downs since joining Newcastle from Swansea. He’s mixed some quality performances in which he controlled the game with some shocking displays of indiscipline.

Whatever you think of Shelvey, there can be no doubting his will to win. He’s especially keen to prove himself against the best teams and he’ll be fired up on Sunday.

Shelvey can score from outside the area whether from free-kicks or open play and he could get Newcastle off to the perfect start by scoring the game’s first goal at 25/1 with William Hill.
