There was some shocking news ahead of the 70th renewal of the British Grand Prix. The owners of Silverstone, the race’s sole host since 1987, announced that they were activating a break clause in their contract making 2019 the last time the famous old track will host the British GP. That decision has thrown the future of the race into doubt but this is no time for those involved to be thinking about anything other than securing the maximum number of points this weekend. Those at the top of both the drivers’ and constructor’s championships desperately need points to hold of the competition and after dramatic recent races, F1 fans will be hoping for more thrills and spills.
Joe Root could not have hoped for a much better first match as captain of the England test cricket team. The Yorkshireman admitted that he brought a £1 coin out for the toss at Lord’s as he didn’t know the protocol but when the match got underway he looked assured in his decisions and unaffected by the pressure as he scored a magnificent 190 in the first innings.
The John Deere Classic is the final event on the PGA Tour before next week’s Open Championship. Held at TPC Deere Run, one of the easiest courses on the PGA Tour roster, this is generally thought of as a nice warm up for the third major of the season.
