The Premier League of Darts gets underway next week and there is no doubt that the pick of the ties sees Phil Taylor and Michael van Gerwen go head-to-head in a repeat of the World Championship final on New Years Day.
This is the first time that the young Dutchman has been entered into the Premier League and he knows what a tough task he has ahead of him. However, after his performances at the World Championships, he should be confident of going a long way this campaign.
Of course, van Gerwen could not have a much tougher start to life in this tournament as he takes on world-number one and current holder of the trophy, Phil Taylor.
There is no surprises in the odds for this one either as Taylor is the favourite with the bookmakers at 6/5 with Sportingbet.
Van Gerwen is then a 7/4 shot with BetVictor, which might not be a bad bit of value on someone who is as talented as he is.
The World Championships are sure to have done the man from Holland a lot of good and he now knows what it is like to play at the highest level. Bets on him going all the way in this Premier League campaign might be popular as he does look to be one of the best players involved.
As for Taylor, he comes into this one with a victory on his mind to get the new season off to a flyer. It doesn’t matter what tournament the Englishman enters, he always expects to win.
He has won this trophy six times in the past, so certainly has the knowhow. Taylor does know he has to perform well to beat van Gerwen, but he could have the edge over him after such an impressive win earlier in the month.
For this one, bets on the correct score market could be a good way to make some money off the bookies and at the moment, a 6-6 draw is being offered at 10/3 with Blue Square.
Taylor is then being offered at 6/1 with Bet365 to win 7-4, with a 7-5 victory for van Gerwen at 7/1 with Coral.
We like the look of betting on this market though, but think that Taylor could give his opponents a bit of a thrashing in this one. It might be a harsh introduction to the Premier League for van Gerwen and Taylor could take this encounter by seven frames to three.
The chances of this happening are rated at 10/1 with Paddy Power.
These two players are the best around right now, so it all makes for a fascinating evening next Thursday.
