The Victor Chandler Chase is a Grade One National Hunt race that gets underway from Ascot on Saturday afternoon. The race is run over around two miles and one furlong and there will be a total on 13 fences jumped.
It is all set to be one of the highlights in a bumper day of jump racing, providing the weather doesn’t get the better of the racecourse.
All eyes are likely to be on one horse this weekend – Sprinter Sacre. Nicky Henderson’s charge has been quite superb in his career so far, claiming six wins from as many races. The bookmakers make him the clear favourite for this one and you can back him at 1/5 with Paddy Power.
Sprinter Sacre was a brilliant winner in the Tingle Creek at Sandown back in December and his performance really showed what a talent he is. If he can avoid any mistakes here, then he is sure to come out on top and then head into the Queen Mothers Champion Chase at Cheltenham in March full of confidence.
In truth, not many bets are likely to be places on anyone but Sprinter Sacre as he is in such fine form. However, if not at his best, the Paul Nicholls’ Sanctuaire could be ready to spring a surprise.
Nicholls’ Gelding was a huge nineteen lengths behind Sprinter Sacre at Sandown in December, so really needs to put in a better performance here. The champion trainer is never to be written off though and you can back a win for Sanctuaire at 7/1 with Bet365.
Somersby was the winner of this event last year, so has the knowhow at Ascot. It is going to take a superb display for him to challenge the favourite in this one and it is tough to know what to expect as this is his first race of the season. Also, Somersby has a new trainer in Mick Channon and a bet on him will give you odds of 8/1 with Betfred.
Wishfull Thinking and Kumbeshwar are both at 25/1 with SkyBet, so the bookies don’t seem to fancy their chances of winning here.
We cannot look past a win for Sprinter Sacre is this one, but in order to get a bit more value from the bookies, it might be worth betting on just how many lengths he wins by.
Henderson’s charge has won at a canter a number of times in his career, so backing him to win by 14 lengths or more is what we are going for and it is available at 9/4 with Ladbrokes.
