The build-up to the first Test between England and India suggested that we would be in for a thrilling five-match series.

India won the T20 series before England levelled the tour up by winning the ODI series 2-1. That had the tour level but the odds were very much in India’s favour as the number one ranked Test cricket team in the world.

Things have changed significantly though following England’s victories in the first two Tests at Edgbaston and Lord’s. The hosts are the odds-on favourites to make it three wins from three and in our England v India betting tips we agree with the bookies’ reading of the match.

Indian Woes to Continue at Trent Bridge

There were signs that all was not well in the Indian camp long before they fell to a narrow defeat in the first Test at Edgbaston.

Ravi Shastri was a hugely popular player but he is reportedly struggling to cope with player power. Those in the know suggest that Shastri is the head coach in name only and that many big decisions are in fact made by Virat Kohli.

Shastri certainly didn’t appear to be in control of things during India’s only warm-up match against Essex which was reduced from four days as the India players complained about the condition of the playing surface and their Colchester hotel.

That threw India’s preparations into disarray and while it didn’t hamper the performance levels of the excellent Kohli with the bat, his teammates were unable to do enough to stop England from winning the first Test.

At least the match at Edgbaston was close. England were far too good for India at Lord’s, winning by an innings and 59 wins.

England are very much on top in the Test series and we think they’ll be able to hammer their advantage home, especially as Kohli is a major doubt due to a back injury. Therefore, we recommend backing England to win at 8/13 with Black Type.

England to Make Light Work of India’s Top Order

India’s top order batting line-up is a major concern to all Indian cricket fans. The problem is most keenly felt away from home with India making over 300 just once in their last five Tests away to South Africa and England.

Those five Test also saw India dismissed for less than 200 six times and only one payer other than Kohli has made a half-century.

In contrast, England’s bowling attack is in rude health.

James Anderson and Stuart Broad are leading the attack with aplomb and have been well backed up by Sam Curran, Chris Woakes. Ben Stokes has also been recalled to the squad after being found not guilty of affray at Bristol Crown Court.

We think India’s top order will struggle again so bet on the Indian opening partnership in their first innings to score under 23.5 runs at 10/11 with McBookie.

Stokes to Pack a Punch Back on the Pitch

Ben Stokes will be delighted to get back to the day job of playing cricket after spending the last week or so in court. He has disciplinary action still to face from the ECB but that’s not enough to stop him from being called straight back into the squad for Trent Bridge.

It was Stokes who ultimately made the difference in the first Test by taking the key wicket of Kohli in India’s second innings and he could star again with bat and ball so back him to be man of the match at 9/2 with Betfred.

Kohli be man of the match at 9/2 with Betfred.
